今日は、俺が実際に体験した事、そして今回自分のプロダクトを藍染めを使って作りあげた過程を書き記そうと思います。特別に今回は株式会社トータスさんにお邪魔させていただき、全ての工程を手伝って頂きました。
Today, I am going to talk about my experience and all the process I went through in order to make my own products. Tortoise Co.,Ltd. is the company which helps me out for all the process I needed to go through.
タデ科の藍が育つ様子です。まだ高さが5cm程度で、外の畑に移されるまでに15cm育たなければなりません。この時、苗床の下に落ちた種が育って大きくなった藍の葉を親指と人差し指でこすってみたところ、時間が経つにつれて色が藍色になっていくんです。酸化という化学反応を経て藍が藍色になるという変化を目の前にして、この植物の強さを感じました。
These little indigo plants were still about 5 cm and still needs sometimes to grow up till 20 cm and will be delivered to a large farm land to be raised without any stress. When I visit this greenhouse, it was really hot and sweaty. My friend REKI told us to pick up some indigo leaves on the ground and smash them between our fingers. I felt that this plant had plenty of water inside and the water turned out immediately into a navy color. I was really shocked that green turned into navy. Indigo blood got oxidized and had a chemical reaction into a totally different color. "Strength" was one of my first impression of this little boy had.
乾燥した茎。赤いです。葉っぱが刈り取られた後、畑一面は藍とは逆の色である『赤』一面になるそうです。これは一度この目で見てみたいと思わされるくらいの写真を見せてもらいました。鉄分が作用しているとか。年によって赤の彩度が違うそうです。赤い乾燥した茎の使い道は次の年に使われる『肥料』となるそうです。
Red dried stem. Almost rusty color. After a harvest, you can see a whole farm land becoming bloody red. Red color means that the stems contain iron inside. Red saturation is depending on a healthy soil and the weather themselves. These red dried stems will be recycled as manure for the next planting.
まずは染める布を「染まる部分」と「染まらない部分」に分けます。もしかしたら丈夫な糸で均等にきつく縛ればとか後々色々反省はしましたが、この時はこれが最善策であったので、次回藍染めをやる時にこの反省はとっておこうと思いました。
Classifying a part of dyeing and not. I realized later on that I should've tied up more tightly with a strong thread, but hopefully it will work out for the next time. At this time, I used a rubber band.
染めの工程になり、染料（藍液）の臭いがきつい！って最初は思いますが、そのうち慣れてきます。しかし、この作業は腰にくる。１回染めただけでは、薄い水色以下の色であり、この染めの作業を何度何度も違う樽で繰り返さなければならないのです。話は変わりますが、この染料は生きています。そうです、バクテリアがこの液の中に潜んでいて、このバクテリアがいるがために布が染まるという、なんとも面白い化学反応と生物反応が一緒に起こっている状態です。藍は水に溶けない性質なのですが、アルカリには溶けるという性質をバクテリアが助け、色素交換しようやく染色が可能になるという仕組みです。このバクテリアは空気に触れることを嫌いますが、染めの工程で結局空気に触れてしまいます。最初は黄色っぽい色が段々と藍色に変わっていく。ただ、バクテリアが死んでしまっては染めができないために、温度調整、栄養などの『バクテリアの飼育』が必要になってくるんです。
On the process of dyeing, you will definitely smell them really bad. However, since they are all alive and a part of nature, you somehow get used to being around them, but this smell is just a first attack. Hurting your back will be the second assault. Since you need to keep rubbing a stuff in your hands and once you take it out to the air, you need to let it absorb some oxygen. Then, you go back to a different barrel then keep rolling the same process till you see the color you like to have. I did 6 times though. Different subject, but these indigo dyes are alive. A certain bacteria lives in this dark blue and yellow liquid and it helps to dye everything that touches. Indigo does not soluble in water but alkalic one with a help of this bacteria Once you see a dyed stuff with yellow color, but once it is oxidized, it will turn into navy color. This bacteria won't be able to survive outside of a barrel, but still they touch themselves into the air through a surface and also being mixed. In order to let them keep alive, there is a necessity of temperature control and feeding constantly.
ようやく、水洗いなどを終えて染め上がった布たち。とても濃い感じで良い出来だ！って思うのですが、乾くとまた一段と色が淡くなります。そして、後に出てくる工程があるのですが、まだこの布に含まれている石灰や、アルカリ性の要素を取り出さなければならなく、１度に全ての工程を行なうのは不可能に近いのです。手間と時間がとてもかかる事はもう既にお分かりですよね。
Finally, it turned out completely navy color, and I earned a huge satisfaction after all those hard works I did, but they are going to be a little less color you think they would be.
ここからは、抜染作業の前段階という工程。これは藍染めとは関係ないのですが、ここから普通の藍染めされた布に自分のメインスタイルである顔をシルクスクリーンを使用して藍色に染まった部分に抜染用のノリを塗り付けます。それを自然乾燥させるわけで、またここで手間と時間がかかるのです。まあ藍染めとは関係ありませんが、今回作るプロダクトには多くの手間と多くの時間がかかっているのはお分かりでしょう。
This is not a part of indigo dye process at all, but I needed to leave some footsteps on these neutral indigo works. So, I prepared some silk screen prints with my friend who knows about discharging dyeing work. After I put some special paste on top of this silk screen, the paste stayed just like a usual silk screen printing. Let it dry and waited for the next step. Don't you think that it takes hours and days to make this indigo dye item really special? It really does.
最後に、日を改め、抜染作業の最終段階です。まずは高熱のスチームをまんべんなくノリがついた部分に当てます。それからそれらを少し乾燥させ、水で石灰を取るために流します。その後、染められた布を水と酢で割られたバケツに入れるわけです。そう、アルカリ性の布と酸性の酢で中性にしてようやく人に安全な『藍』のプロダクトができあがるのです。
At last, I was able to discharge a color by removing the paste. First of all, I did steamed onto my design and let it dry for a bit. Watering them and I needed to take lime out of these clothes. After that, I mixed with water and vinegar in order to neutralize and make this product safe to anyone who are going to use.
この工程から分かるように、今回は強行突破で合計で約３日間～４日間かけて作りました。それだけではなく、この藍というのはまずは温室で種から苗へ、そこから夏まで畑で育て、収穫をします。そして葉を乾燥させ、もしここから『つくも』と呼ばれる染料の元を作るにはさらに寝かせて、なんども水をまき、醗酵させる必要があります。そして、染料を作るために色々な魔法を使って、それを保持するために温度調整など（冬では電気カーペットを使用したりする）、多くの手間と時間がかかっているのです。染料の中で生きているバクテリアにも寿命があり、約２ヶ月（海部藍）から約４ヶ月（つくも）で死んでしまうそうです。そうなると限られた材料で染め物を続けていかなければならなく、少しでも失敗をすれば大きな損失になるのは間違いありません。
As you can see through all of these processes and times, like I spent 3 or 4 days rapidly, it was exhausting. Not only the effort of dyeing, but you need to remember that everything started from a seed, growing up, harvesting, drying process, using some magics to make dyes alive, and do whatever bacteria wants. This bacteria will end their life within 2 to 4 months. Failure will affect everything on this business and cannot afford to make that happen.
藍染めの商品を見ると、まずみんなは『値段が高い』と言うでしょう。確かにとても高いです。しかし、上記のプロセスがあり、その上たくさんの効能があり、化学染料ではなく、伝統工芸の一つと考えれば値段は高いなんて決して思いませんよね。妥当の値段であると考えられます。
When you see the price on any indigo dyed products, you are going to shout out like, "HOLLY SHIT, really really expensive though." However, as you already read and studied about how this traditional indigo dye products came alive into our market, you will respect the price and you are not going to think of the products as just one of blue items. It is absolutely an art work.
