-- Please introduce yourself first, and tell me your today music activity.
Aloe Blacc(以下A)：「カリフォルニア在住のMC/ヴォーカリスト/ソングライター/プロデューサーです。ヒップホップからフォーク、サルサからソウルまで、色んなスタイルの音楽を作ってるよ。今は、Stones Throw から出たソロ・デビューアルバム、『Shine Through』のアコースティック・バージョンに取り掛かっているところだよ」
Aloe Blacc (as A) : My name is Aloe Blacc. I am an emcee / vocalist / songwriter / producer from California. I make a lot of different styles of music from hip-hop to folk and salsa to soul. Right now I am working on an acoustic version of my solo debut called Shine Through on Stones Throw Records.
DJ Day (以下Ｄ)：「Dayです。DJとプロデューサーをやってます。今朝、今動いている曲のためにRhodesでコード進行をやってたのと、今は俺がリミックスしたMo’ Horizonsというドイツのグループの曲のミックスダウンをやってるところだよ」
DJ Day (as D) : My name is Day, I’m a DJ and producer. This morning I worked out some chord progressions on the Rhodes for a song I’m working on and mixed down my remix for a group in Germany called Mo’ Horizons.
■ アーティストとしてのキャリアを簡単に教えてください。
-- Could you tell me your music career as an artist?
A：「DJ Exileと1995年に音楽を作り始めたんだ。EMANONっていうヒップホップグループでスタートして、その頃からずっと一緒に活動してる。シングルとEPをリリースしてから何年か経って、2005年に『The Waiting Room』というアルバムをリリースしたんだ。その頃から俺たちはヨーロッパと北米のツアーを何回かして、最近になってお互いにソロプロジェクトをやる事を決めたとこなんだ。Exileは『Dirty Scinece』というアルバムを2006年にSound in Colorからリリースしたよ」
A : I started out making music in 1995 with DJ Exile. We started a hip hop group called EMANON and have been making music together ever since. We released an album in 2005 called The Waiting Room after several years of singles and EP releases. Since then we have toured Europe and North America a couple of times. Recently, we both decided to do solo projects. Exile released an album called Dirty Science in 2006 on Sound in Color.
D：「80年代後半にDJをやり始めて、Jazzy JeffやJoe Cooleyなんかを聴いていたよ。彼らのスクラッチを聴いて自分もできるようになる為に何時間でも座ってられた。DJのビデオが出てくる前の話だけどね。その頃は、彼らがどんな風にやっているのかを、自分でひとつひとつ分析していかなくちゃならなかったんだ。今でも思うけど、これが一番ベストな学習方法だよね。90年代初期にはGeminiサンプラーを友達から買って、2トラックのカセットレコーダーでビートを作ってた。1995年頃、Rip Oneと組んでInnernationalを結成、その頃から音楽により真剣に取り組むようになったんだ。 『Return of the DJ3』と『Laid in Full』に参加したよ。それから2004年頃、“What Planet What Station”(Milk Crate Records)をリリースして、今現在も自分のやるべきことをやってるところだね」
D : I started DJing in the late 80’s, listening to people like Jazzy Jeff and Joe Cooley. I would sit for hours listening to their scratches and try to figure them out. This was before there were DJ videos. Back then you had to analyze and try to breakdown what they were doing. I still think that’s the best way to learn. In the early 90’s I bought a 12 second Gemini sampler from a friend and would make beats on a 2 track cassette recorder. Around 1995 I hooked up with Rip One and we formed Innernational and that’s when I started to take music more seriously. We had a few releases which led to us being on Return of the DJ 3 and Laid in Full. Then, around 2004, I dropped “What Planet What Station” (Milk Crate Records) and I’m still doing my thing.
■ サブコンタクトとの出会いは？
-- How did you meet Subcontact?
Ａ：「オンラインでSubcontactとは出会ったんだ。世界中の人々とのコネクション・ツールとして、インターネットはとても重要なものになってるよ。Subcontactとのやり取りの中で信頼関係ができて、Cradleのビートにレコーディングをしたんだよ」
A : I met Subcontact online. The internet has been a really important tool for connecting me with people all around the world. I established a working relationship with Subcontact and started recording on beats from Cradle in Japan.
D：「SubcontactのYasuがアメリカに来てた時に、Aloeと Exile (Emanon)が彼を紹介してくれたんだ。その時俺はショーがあって、彼に俺のＣＤをあげたんだよ。彼が日本に帰ってから連絡をくれて、俺たちは ”Day After Day”の7インチシリーズをリリースして、それから一緒に仕事をするようになったんだ」
D : Aloe and Exile (Emanon) introduced me to Yasu who happened to be visiting in the U.S. We had a show together and I gave Yasu a CD of my music. He contacted me when he got back to Japan and we released the Day After Day 7” series and have been working together ever since.

■ DayはMPMというレーベルからも作品をリリースしてると思うんだけどどういう経緯でそうなったの？
-- You’ve released your work from the label called MPM. Could you tell me the details of how it came about?
D：「www.soulstrut.comっていう俺がよく行く掲示板があってさ、そこにコレクターやプロデューサー、DJ達のためのフォーラムがあるんだ。 Nasの”It Ain’t Hard to Tell”のリミックスを俺が作って掲示板に載せたら、MPMを運営するOliver (Olski)がそれを聴いて連絡してくれてさ、Gone Badの12インチをリリースしてMPMのコンピレーションにもフィーチャーされたんだ」
D : There’s a message board I frequent called www.soulstrut.com, which is a forum for crate diggers, producers and DJ’s. I made a remix of Nas’ “It Ain’t Hard to Tell” over one of my beats and posted it online. Oliver (Olski), who runs MPM, heard it and contacted me about releasing some of my music, which led to the “Gone Bad” 12” and being featured on the MPM compilations.
■ アメリカもしくは自分の周りのファッションシーンはどんな感じ？音楽とファッションの交流はある？
-- What the atmosphere of the fashion scene around you or in the U.S.? Does the fashion link with the music?
Ａ :「表紙で本のジャッジは絶対しないけど、たまに人のファッションで少しは彼らの中身がわかっちゃうよね。ヒップホップファッションは凄く変化してて、無くなりつつあるけど、まだまだ音楽とはリンクしてるよ。例えば、つい最近プロデューサーのDelaと一緒にSubcontactからリリースする “Sag”って曲をレコーディングをしたところなんだけど、内容が、世界各地のヒップホップの独特なスタイルのことを歌ってるんだよ」
A : Although we say to never judge a book by its cover, sometimes the way a person fashion can tell a little about them. Hip Hop fashion has gone through a lot of changes but it is still linked with the music. For example, I just recorded a song with producer Dela for Subcontact called？Sag？about that particular style that is native to hip hoppers around the world.
D：「俺は結構シンプルな人間なんだ。Tシャツとジーンズがあれば全然いけるよ。たくさんの人は、誰が何を着てるってストリートウェアの事を気にしてて、ぱっと見同じなのに『個性的』になろうとしてるんだ。俺の哲学は、もし俺が好きなら買う。トレンドには流されないようにしてるよ」
D : I’m a pretty simple person. Just give me a T-shirt and jeans and I’m good to go. A lot of people obsess over streetwear and who’s wearing what, and you end up having a bunch of people trying to be ‘different’ who all look the same. My philosophy is, if I like it, I buy it. I try not to worry too much about trends.
■ 今自分が注目してるアーティストとか、よく聞いてる音楽とかある？
-- Is there any artist who you’re paying attention, or is there any music that you’re listening often?
Ａ：「ロス出身のBluっていうＭＣがヤバイね。彼はヒップホップ・シーンの中でも眩しいほどの才能があって、もっと上って行く存在だよ。あとは最近しょっちゅうGeorgia Anne Muldrowを聴いてるよ。彼女は凄く才能があって次世代のソウル・ミュージックだよ」
A : I am paying attention to new emcees like Blu from Los Angeles. He is a bright new talent in the hip hop game and will go very far. I also listen to Georgia Anne Muldrow quite often. She is the next generation of soul music and is very talented.
D：「Flying Lotus, Kutiman, Shawn Leeの新しいアルバムは素晴らしくて何かを感じる。まだそんなに知られていないアーティストを探そうとしてるんだ。MySpaceでMiles Bonnieという人を見つけて（※実はMilesBonnyは偶然にもSubcontact から作品をリリースしてるSounds Goodというグループのメンバーだったので、ビックリ）『Smell Smoke』というアルバムを彼から買ったんだけど、それがすごく良いんだ。Willie Evans Jr.はすごくクレイジーなことをやっていて、オリジナル・ヒップホップだよ。俺のツレのBlame OneはKankickとやってるんだけど、聴いたらかなりドープだったよ」
D : I’ve really been feeling Flying Lotus, Kutiman, Shawn Lee’s new album is great. I try to look for artists who haven’t been discovered yet as well. I found this guy Miles Bonnie on MySpace and bought his “Smell Smoke” album from him. I’m definitley feeling that. Willie Evans Jr. is doing some really crazy, original hip hop. My man Blame One has been working with Kankick and what I’ve heard has been really dope.

■ Aloeは昨年Stones Throwから歌をメインにしたアルバムを出して、今年はCradle との新プロジェクトBEEやDayとの新ユニットでかなり忙しいそうだけど、それぞれどういう感じのものを表現しようと思ってるの？
-- for Aloe; You’ve released your album that is recorded mainly the songs from Stones Throw in the last year. It seems like you’ve been really busy this year for the new project called BEE with Cradle and the new unit with Day, but what are you thinking about to express by the each project?
Ａ：「『Shine Through』は世界中の人からの反応が凄く良かったから、リリースした後、年の殆どはプロモーションの為にのツアーに費やしたよ。Cradleと一緒に日本でもいくつかショーをやった後には、BEEっていう新プロジェクトの為にレコーディングもしたよ。常にプロダクションチームと忙しく作曲をしていて、俺らは共にクリエイティブな新しい音楽を作って新時代ヒップホップの代表として色んな形でシーンを広げていくつもりだよ！あとDJ Dayとの新プロジェクトは、俺たちが育った90年代の愛すべきミドルスクールに戻った感じのスタイルで作ってるよ！」
A : The LP, Shine Through, was well received from people all over the world and I spent most of the year after the release traveling and promoting. After visiting Japan for some shows with Cradle, I have been busy working on songs with the production team on a project called BEE. Together we will make creative new music and explore different ways to represent hip hop in a new era. I am also working with DJ Day on a project that brings back the middle school hip hop style that we all grew to love in the 90s.
■ Subcontactはあなたにどってどんなレーベルですか？
-- What kind of label is Subcontact for you? What do you think about Subcontact?
Ａ：「Subcontactはすごくアーティスティックで誠実なヒップホップ・レーベルだよ。もっとたくさんのレーベルが、どんな音楽をリリースしたいっていう、より強いコンセプトを持って、クオリティーとの両立をキープするべきだと思う。Subcontactのクオリティーは常に信頼できるよ」
A : Subcontact is a hip hop label with a lot of artistic integrity. I think that more labels need to have a stronger concept of what kind of music they want to release and keep consistent with the quality. You can always depend on quality from Subcontact.
D：「Subcontactは素晴らしいと思うよ。本物のアーティストを扱ってるレーベルだ。俺はDJ Mista DonutやCradle, Izanamiなんかを凄く気に入ってるんだ！Mitsu The Beats, Nujabes, Shinsight Trioやその他もろもろ、実は日本のヒップホップが好きなんだ。今たくさんいい作品が出てるよね」
D : I think Subcontact is great. They have some really solid artists on the label. I’m really digging DJ Mista Donut, Cradle, Izanami,. I like a lot of Japanese hip hop actually, like Mitsu, Nujabes, Shinsight etc. There’s a lot of good stuff coming out right now.
