MADSAKI

この世はMADである。「MAD」は、中学生の頃使っていたような英和辞典には、おそらく「怒り狂った」だとか、「狂った」という意味として掲載されていると思うけど、NYCの街中で耳を澄ませてみると、強面のお兄さんたちが「MAD」という単語を乱射するように使っているのが聞き取れるかもしれない。日本語で言うと、「すげぇ○○」とか「超絶○○」って感じかも。That's mad!とか言ってたら、「それやっべーな！」とかかもしんない。

The world is mad. May be I used to use the word "mad" more often when I lived in Brooklyn and Philly.

そんな重厚感のある単語を名前にしているアーティストのMADSAKIさん。私が彼のことを正真正銘、MADだと感じたのは、去年の3月に渋谷西武のインスタレーションをネット上で目にした時だった。

MADSAKI is a Japanese artist. I truely thought he was mad when I saw his installation work for Shibuya Seibu, a very traditional department store in Tokyo.

渋谷のど真ん中、それもデパートの聖地とも言える化粧品売り場だ。色鮮やかに、完璧に作りあげられた女性モデルの顔の数々と、ありとあらゆる甘い香りに溢れた地下のフロア。それを一番高い位置から見下ろすように掲げられた言葉達。あまり詳しく翻訳してしまうと面白さが激減してしまうのでやめておくけど、ちょっと米語スラングがわかる人だったら、衝撃を受けて、しばらく考え込んでから、大笑いするだろう。そしてこう考えるのかもしれない。「ヒドい！！けど、そのとおり！あたしだって、ビッチになりたいのかもしれない。ツルツルの肌に、今年の服にピッタリな色の唇で、自信を持ってデートに挑んだり、賢い一言で大っ嫌いな男に一発仕返してみたい。さぁ、秘密兵器のコスメはどこ？！」

This is a make-up department in the middle of Shibuya, Tokyo. That is a sacred place where women come to worship these artificial faces full of vivid colors. I must note that there are very few Japanese who get this. They must be shocked at first, or they might laugh. They might laugh out loud and say, "yeah that's why I'm here. I'm a badass bitch. Where is my new weapon?"

ネットの記事で、女というのは男にちょっと恥ずかしい気持ちにさせられると恋に落ちやすいとかそういうのを読んだことがある。わかる女の子がみたら、ストリート臭がプンプンする男からちょっと恥ずかしい事言われて、なんか恋したくなっちゃった、みたいな感覚に陥るのかもしれない。女性達による女性達のための百貨店化粧品売り場で。そういうちょっと変わった角度からのエロさみたいなの、超絶いいじゃん！！MADじゃない？

I've read somewhere on the internet saying Japanese women would be more likely to fall in love when the guy makes her feel a bit embarrassed. This installation is like being told something stupid and embarrassing by some dude in the middle of a makeup department. It's a floor filled with all things women. And only you are hearing this (because the majority of others wouldn't understand it.) To me it's a weird kind of sexy in a crazy stupid way. It's mad.

もちろん、「ふーん。全然わからないけど、なんか黒と白と英語でオシャレ？」みたいなお客さんがほとんどだったかもしれないけど。

The majority of customers probably thought that these are stylish. It's English words written in black and white.

そのMADSAKIさんがシンガポールの、しかもわりとメジャーなギャラリーで展示をすると聞いて、すごく興味が湧いた。シンガポールといえば、法律の厳しさで有名なはず。例えば世界的に有名なエロ動画サイトにアクセスしようものなら、下記のように国がブロックしているのである。

When I heard MADSAKI would be showcasing his works in Singapore, I though uh-oh. Singapore blocks everything. I get this message all the time, making me feel so obscene.

そんな国で、これだ。

全ての人にそれなりに受け入れられるモノよりも、多くの人に嫌悪感を抱かせながら、ごく少数の人たちが爆笑して大喜びするようなモノってカッコいいと思う。だって、そのごく少数の中に入れた時って、最高の気分なんだもの。っていう事を、酔っぱらいながらMADSAKIさんご本人に熱く語った記憶。

There are things that are meant to be accepted by a lot of people. And there are things that are made for a very small group of people. May be the majority would not understand the point, or they would totally hate it and be disgusted by it, but a very few would totally be in love with it. I really wish there are more things in the world that's like that. I told this to MADSAKI himself while I was super drunk.
